Sasolburg is an industrial town located in the Free State province. The town was established in 1954 for and by employees of the Sasol Refinery located on the outskirts of the town as it is now.

During the years when there were strict trade embargoes, it was imperative for the country to process its own extensive coal reserves and extract and refine oil from the rich coal reserves. The pilot plant was then established in Sasolburg. Production of oil is still in progress and further refineries have been built throughout South Africa.

Sasol has been involved in upgrading services and standards of living for the employees and the town of Sasolburg.
