Houghton is a vast suburb located in the northern region of Johannesburg with a large number of suburbs with varying demographics.

The region does fall more within the middle to upper-class income groups but with the large number of apartments in Victoria and surrounding suburbs like Kensington B and Norwood there is a fair number of ideal starter homes or apartments which could also cater for young executives.

The mixed property usage which comprises freehold homes and apartments offer a varied and stable market and adds the strong dimension of a high demand for rental property.

The prime location can be belied as it is a quiet suburb. Access to the major commercial hubs in Sandton, Rivonia, Rosebank and even Bryanston are easily accessible on the major roads like Corlett Drive, the M1 freeway, Louis Botha Avenue into Bompas Road onto Jan Smuts Drive and into Hyde Park and alternatively to Rivonia or Rosebank. Bryanston is accessed via Jan Smuts Drive which links up to William Nicol Drive further north. Thus the suburb is in a prime location from every vantage road it offers.

Access is also not restricted to only commercial hubs as there are a number of industrial hubs which are also crucial to sustaining the suburbs existence and thus the industrial hubs of Isando, Kew, Jet Park and Germiston can be accessed via the R25 linking with the N36 and onto the R21 R24 interchange.

Both universities of Johannesburg, being UJ and Wits are easily accessible from the suburb which means student accommodation should not be ruled out as a long term investment prospect.

There are a large number of schools servicing the suburb such as Sacred Heart College, Houghton School, King Edward VII School and Paterson Park School.

Malls servicing the suburb are Killarney Mall, Norwood Mall, Rosebank Mall and Melrose Arch.
