In 1882, the Volksraad, a body that was established to run the village of what is now Vereeniging, decided to establish the town. The core source of growth at that time was coal mining. This led to allied industries being established and alternative mining activity like fire-clay and silica.

Today the town is noted as being one of the major industrial manufacturing centres in the country as the industry has diversified into steel and steel related manufacturing products, brick and tile manufacturing, refractory manufacturing and the several Eskom thermal power plants that are crucial to supplying electricity to the nearby gold mines.

Taking all this history into account one can deduce that the town is an extensive residential, industrial and commercial property market with at least 29 residential suburbs at present.

Naturally, the town, like any other large town caters for the complete income spectrum. The architecture of homes in the town’s suburbs are an archive of progress over time which is also a factor determining the status of the various suburbs.

Due to the large industrial and commercial sector in the town investors also find good value or money in the rental market.

There is also a fair commercial farming sector in the greater Vereeniging which adds some more diversity to the overall market.

With over 15 schools in the various towns, there is certainly no shortage of educational institutions and there are also tertiary facilities such as the University of South Africa Vaal Campus, T.U.T Vaal Campus and the University of the North-West Vaal Triangle Campus.

Due to the fact that Vereeniging is on the banks of the Vaal River means, there are opportunities to be had in the commercial catering industry by way of guest houses and lodges. The town has an almost all year round tourist attraction.
