Nigel is a town of the Ekurhuleni municipality thus located on the East Rand. The town was formed on a farm named Vrakensfontein in 1886. When gold was discovered on the farm the Nigel Gold Mining Company was formed.

As the mine expanded, a town started forming around the mine. Subsidiary industries such as engineering arrived to service the needs of the mine. The first properties were rudimentary homes that were the core of the newly found town.

Today the town is still sustained by gold mining and the subsidiary engineering industries which has been the sustaining factor in the town expanding to what it is today.

The architecture is not as modern as larger cities and suburbs which is an indication that town is a working town.

Property use is made up of freehold homes, apartments and sectional-title town-house complexes. Being a little removed from major centres means the property values have not grown as strongly as other towns but are still growing at the market norm of 6% year on year.

The fact that property values fall within the “affordable” segment should be viewed as opportunities and thus meaning the buy-to-let market is a stable and major segment in the town.

The town does have all the important amenities and the advantage of a smaller town means all the amenities are close by making travel within the town convenient.

Being this far on the East Rand means the town is surrounded by mining towns.

There are a few tourist attractions close to the town which if planned properly means a Guest House could be a diamond amongst the gold.

The town is large enough to have a few suburbs like Ferryvale, Prosperita and Pretoriusstad to mention three of the more popular suburbs.

Most of the retail outlets are on the main road of the town doing away with malls.
