Elsburg is part of the Germiston municipality and was established after the existing suburbs to the east of Johannesburg became too small. This well established suburb was set out on a farm named Klippoortjie in 1887.

An unconfirmed rumor states that Elsburg was almost chosen as the capital of the Goldfields instead of Johannesburg.

The homes in Elsburg range from affordable to expensive thus the whole income spectrum is catered for which increases the demand for homes in the suburb.

It is well located for travel to and from work and other suburbs and amenities. Industrial hubs form the backbone of suburbs on the east rand and Elsburg is no different as there are industrial hubs all around. Industrial hubs supporting the income of a broader community including Elsburg are Germiston South Industrial, Wadeville, Alrode, Herriotdale and Junction Hill.
