Like many towns on the West Rand, Carletonville was established from an informal settlement in 1938 in the gold mining era that was the prime reason for these settlements being established. The town has formally been designated a town in 1959 and named after Carleton Jones, who was a mining director at the time. Naturally, mining directors has the money to live lavish lifestyles and their homes reflected their wealth which was a contributing factor in how the value of the property market was derived. The deepest gold mine in the world, measured at 3, 749 m, Westonaria, along with other towns and suburbs rely on this mining and allied industries for their household income. Carletonville Aerodrome is a renowned attraction amongst skydiving enthusiasts.

The new mega landmark mall, constructed at R 330 m is now open to the greater Carletonville on the West rand. The implications or indication of this is one primary fact, the population growth the town has experienced has necessitated this to cater for the household needs of consumers in the region. With this comes new homes and a growth in property selection and a varied property value.

The mixed-use of property in the suburb attracts a large portion of the age demographic, from young bachelors, young families, young married couples, established families and pensioners. The suburb is well-established and all the major amenities are established like schools, day-care centres, malls and road infrastructure. The list of schools providing education to the youth of the town is Westfields Primary School, Carleton Jones High School, Wonderfontein High School and Laerskool Oos-Driefontein.

The West Rand is renowned for the mining of various minerals and ores that form a large portion of household incomes for residents in the suburb and then there is also the commercial sector within the mining and allied industries within the suburb and further afield.
