Once known as No.1 Uitenhage, it is a reminder of the graceful period of the town's past. Originally a single storey built in 1815 by Piet Retief, the upper storey was added to the house in 1903, two gables were constructed in a Cape Dutch Baker style. A large balcony was built on three sides of the house supported on cylindrical masonry pillars, woodwork is made of teak. French windows lead out to the balcony and have external shutters. A magnificent teak staircase leads to the upper storey from the wide entrance hall. The bottom floor was extended backwards. A handcarved wooded fireplace in the front room, was shipped out from Italy. This property was once owned by a German immigration agent to the Dutch Government, District Clerks, a sworn surveyor, a Physician then a District Surgeon, a wool trade merchant and businessman, Town Councillors and a Mayor. In 1978 the brothers Le Roux purchased Blenheim from the heirs to the Dolley Estate to house their legal practice. In this way, the beautiful building could be preserved and restored, as it was in a very neglected state. Much care was taken to retain and protect its unique architectural beauty and atmosphere. The Zoning is Business + Commercial (6), Office / Dwelling conversion.Today the legal firm has relocated to Port Elizabeth, and the younger siblings have taken over. The building now hums with activity, and houses various tenanted small businesses that occupy the many living areas and large bedrooms on both levels. The rentals could very comfortably contribute or even possibly cover a bond payment ! There is ample on site parking at the rear of the property. It is an enclosed erf, with beautiful original handmade cast iron pedestrian and double car gates. The property was declared a National Monument in 1981.The brothers wish that the buildings be conserved, maintained and nurtured so that it can be bequeathed to future generations.
